Environmental DNA (eDNA) is genetic material shed by organisms into their surroundings — skin cells, mucus, waste, scales — and left behind in water, soil, or sediment. Instead of capturing or observing a species directly, we filter a sample of the environment, extract the DNA present in it, and sequence targeted genetic markers to identify which organisms were recently present. It’s a non-invasive way to survey biodiversity without disturbing habitats or handling animals.

Standard turnaround for VeriSeq Core and VeriSeq Enhanced is 7–8 weeks from the day we receive your samples, depending on batch size and current lab volume. VeriSeq Custom projects vary based on scope and are confirmed in your quote. Rush processing may be available, ask us if you’re working against a deadline.

You’ll receive a structured results package: a sample-by-sample species/taxa table (CSV), raw and processed sequence read files (FASTQ) (upon request), and a summary PDF report with relevant quality metrics. Data is organized by sample ID so it maps directly back to your submission sheet. Upon request we can add in statistical analyses across your project life cycle.

It depends on your target taxa and research question: some markers are better suited to fish and vertebrates, others to invertebrates, microbial communities, or specific species of concern. If you’re not sure, reach out beforehand and we can recommend markers.

Yes, qPCR is available for projects needing targeted, species-specific detection or quantification rather than broad community profiling. It’s often used alongside VeriSeq Core or Enhanced to confirm presence/absence of a specific species of concern, or as a standalone option when you already know what you’re looking for. Contact our team to discuss single-species or multiplex qPCR panels and pricing.

For every order, you get: your results data (as above), a written summary report interpreting the findings, and quality-control documentation for the run. On request, we can also provide raw unprocessed sequencing files for your own reanalysis.

Yes. Our core protocols are built on peer-reviewed eDNA methodology, and we can provide detailed methods on request. VeriSeq Custom projects can also be scoped with publication-grade documentation in mind; let us know upfront if that’s a goal.

Samples are logged, extracted, and processed under chain-of-custody tracking. After sequencing is complete and results are QC’d, samples are archived in frozen storage for 90 days in case reruns or additional analysis are needed, then securely disposed of unless you request extended storage or return.
